Grape and Cable Bowls and Plates - Northwood
Northwood made vast amounts of Grape and Cable in many different shapes and sizes and bowls and plates are no different. This page lists and photos the various shapes, sizes and variations in bowls and plates Northwood made in Grape and Cable starting with the smallest and going to the largest.
Small bowls and plates all came from the same mold. Each has a base diameter of 2 1/2 inches and are about 6 inches across depending on how the piece was shaped. There are four clusters of grapes and four grape leaves around the interior of the pieces. The exterior is the classic Northwood basketweave pattern. There are five shapes: plates, six ruffle bowls, double hand grip plates, ice cream shaped bowls and single hand grip plates. They come in amethyst, green, marigold, ice green and white. Centerleaf bowls and plates are the next size up and all came from the same mold. They have a 3 1/4 in base diameter and are about 7 1/2 inches across depending on the shaping. There are four clusters of grapes and four grape leaves around the interior of the pieces. In the center of the interior is a single grape leaf. The exterior has the basketweave pattern. A variant has a plain exterior with a poppy in the marie. There are four shapes: plates, six ruffle bowls, double hand grip plates and single hand grip plates as shown. They come in amethyst, blue, green, marigold, ice blue and white. Bon Bons and Card Trays are two handed bowls. The design has a center leaf. Bon Bons have all four sides pulled up while Card Trays have only two sides pulled up. The exterior has the basketweave pattern.

Standard Variant Plate The standard variant plates and bowls are similar to the standard plates and bowls but have two differences. First, the variants have small tendrils coming from the four interior leaves going into the center. Second, the grape clusters are shaped differently than the more uniform clusters of the standard version. Standard Variant Ruffled Bowl Standard Variant Pie Crust Edge Bowl

There is a variant to the Standard Stippled Variant Plate Typically the all over stippling is enclosed within three rings that encircle the outside of the pattern. The photo above shows the variant to the stippled variant plate. There are no rings and the stippling reaches out to the sawtooth edge. Seems to be found only in amethyst plates. The photo above shows the regular stippled variant plate. It shows the three rings and the stipping is only within those rings.
Spatula Footed Plate with Meander exterior. The grape and cable pattern is much more condensed to the center of the interior thus leaving a band of blank space around the outer rim. This is very similar to a Fenton Grape and Cable piece. We attibute these to Northwood due to the exterior pattern of Meander which is a mold purchased by Northwood from the Jefferson company and also used on Three Fruits pieces. Fenton pieces have a plain exterior. Spatula Footed Bowl with Meander exterior. The ruffled bowl shape came from the same mold as the plate to the left and is actually much harder to find.

The meander pieces come in amethyst, blue, green, ice blue, ice green, marigold and white.

Stippled Large Bowl has a base diameter of 3 7/8 inches and is about 9 3/4 inches across. It only is found stippled and ruffled. They come in amethyst, blue, green and marigold
Large Bowl, Ruffled. These largest bowls come Ruffled, PCE or in the ice cream shape but all came from the same mold. The base diameter is 4 1/4 inches on each and they can be 10 to 11 inches across depending on the shaping. The eight ruffle piece is found in amethyst, blue, green, marigold and white. Large Bowl, Pie Crust Edge. These are referred to as "Salad Bowls" and come in amethsyt, green, marigold and white. Large Bowl Ice Cream Shape The master ice cream bowls could have been paired with six of the smallest Grape and Cable ice cream shaped bowl pictured in White above to form an Ice Cream Set. However, there seem to be many more master sized ice cream bowls than individual sized ice cream bowls leading us to believe these large bowls were typically sold as a single piece. These pieces come in amethsyt, blue, green, marigold, ice green, ice blue and white.
Thumbprint Master Berry Bowl along with six of the indivdual thumbprint berry bowls would make a Berry Set.
