ICGA Appreciation Awards
These 3 1/2 inch round paperweights were made during the late 1960s and the 1970s for ICGA. They say "In Appreciation International Carnival Glass Association" and were given out to attendees at conventions.

They come in two distinct shapes as they were made by different manufacturers over the years. One shape is similar to a hockey puck with definite sides to the disk, while the other is more pancake shaped. They come in several colors and may have markings etched onto the back to note the year of the convention.

From: Carl B. (Indiana) To: Brian, Gary Sullivan, All Re: ICGA Appreciation Awards: It's interesting that you have a very nice white ICGA Appreciation Award. I will make an attempt to explain how these were handled. I do not know the date in which they were first made, but each year they were made in a different color. The Secretary/Editor, Mrs. Rovene Heaton, kept track of which color each recipient had received (for their "service" to / for ICGA) and gave them the award in that color. Let's say that the first year the awards were given, the color was white. Then the first year that you qualified for an award you were given a white one. It may have been a later year than the year the first white ones were given, but it was your first

year, thus you were given the award in the first year's color. I hope that isn't too confusing.

When I was appointed Editor I was given all of the old appreciation awards in a very large box. The box held awards in many different colors. I had no desire to try and keep track of who had received what award in what year, thus the practice ended. It was a problem to know what to do with the unused awards. The problem was solved by using the awards and etching the present year on the back. This was done until all of the awards had been given out. That is why awards may be found with the date etched on the back.

At one time I searched through the old newsletters to find the maker of the awards. It seems that different makers had been used. Not all of the awards are of the exact same shape or height. I think a few people have tried to accumulate each color for their collections. It seems the red one is rather difficult to find.

Above are two other appreciation pieces made by ICGA. In red carnival and made by Fenton is a glass shoe in the Cabbage Rose pattern. The label on the the bottom of the shoe reads "ICGA 1991 ST. LOUIS". The small rosebowl on a pedestal with a crimped top edge is in blue carnival and also made by Fenton. It is in the Inverted Strawberry pattern and the label on the bottom reads "IN APPRECIATION ICGA 1984".
